11.04 Identify the causes of United States' involvement in Vietnam and examine how this involvement affected society.

AH2.H.6.2: Explain the reasons for United States involvement in global wars and the influence each involvement had on international affairs (e.g., Spanish-American War, WWI, WWII, Cold War, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War, Iraqi War, etc.).

HS.SI.1.2: Evaluate resources for point of view, bias, values, or intent of information
Teaching Goals: The goal of this lesson is to introduce the Vietnam War for a broader unit on the topic. In the first lesson, we will use an originally created website to guide the discussion of the Vietnam War through the key events and topics concerning the conflict. In lines with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, competency goal eleven, the student will be able to identify the causes of United States’ involvement in Vietnam was well as asses the significant effect the war had on the American people.
Number of Days Lesson will Take: 1, 30 minutes
Outline of Lesson:
· Introduce the originally created weebly website to students:
o Explain to students the goals and expectations of the day, covering all the tabs on the website.
· Lecture of Lesson:
o Explain the brief summary of the Vietnam war written on the websites homepage
§ Also open the floor for questions to students or comments they might have on the war
o Explain the timeline listed within its own tab, overview the key events. Introduce these events so that they can be covered more fully in a later lesson.
o Show Vietnam War documentary in class. The video is an informative and visual piece that will add to the students understanding.
o Review the fun facts with the class.
· Class Game
o Take a break in the lecture for a game. Have the class play the jeopardy game on the website. This game will be a solid test of what the students may already know about the Vietnam War and the time period around the war.
· Lecture of the Lesson
o Return to a lecture discussion, following the tabs of the website on to the Counter Culture. This information often proves most interesting to a lot of students and is important to understanding the style of modern war.
· Conclude by asking students if they have any questions. Recap the website and remind students it will be a tool in providing an overview on the Vietnam War.
